What Daycare Providers Need to Know
-
Radon testing is required every 3 years for licensed daycare centers, daycare homes, and group daycare homes.
-
Non-residential day care centers are required to hire an IEMA-licensed radon measurement professional to test the facility.
-
Home day care centers may purchase a home test kit and conduct the test themselves or hire a licensed contractor to perform the test. Like us!
-
Proof of radon testing must be submitted during the initial license application and renewal process with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).
-
Facilities must post the most recent radon test results next to their DCFS license.
-
Parents or guardians may request a copy of the radon testing report.
Why Radon Testing Is Important
Radon is a known carcinogen and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, according to the U.S. Surgeon General. Research indicates that children may be more sensitive to radon exposure due to their higher breathing rates and developing cells.

Kids breathe faster and their lungs are still developing, making clean indoor air extra important.
Because radon is invisible, has no taste or smell, it can go unnoticed.
Children spend an average of 30 to 40 hours a week in care, placing them at even greater risk.
The only way to know your radon levels is by conducting testing by a licensed professional.
